A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
