The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
