Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now claimed the season-opening cup on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the scoring in the opening stages.

However, the southern French side struck two times late to take a shock advantage. Initially, the English forward converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this competition for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
