Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
