Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to contest specific calls from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
