Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
